The Back of Derrybawn and beyond

Well it was an easy day out last Saturday in the end, but still incredibly pleasant. Having warned you all of the challenges of Camaderry, and having scared most of you away, the fog made me change the plan and embark on something at a lower altitude. As a result we skirted around the side of Derrybawn, giving us wonderful views of the monastic site. We then headed around behind the Spinc and discovered the magnificent Prezen Rock. A valley of peace and solitude, well away from the usual Glendalough crowds. For November it was incredibly warm, and all in all it was a fairly successful day out in the hills. Here is the pic looking down on the Monastic Site.

I think from the group picture standing near Poulanass falls it is pretty obvious that we are a good looking bunch!

Don't forget our next walk will be accompanied by food and drink, so I will expect all to attend!

Thanks Betty for the cool photos, and for emailing them on. Until next time!

And thanks for this pic Phil! A new member of the group but a great contribution with a lovely photo of Poulanass.

A Stroll in the Knocknacloghe Valley - Scarr Mountain and Kanturk

Hey all,

Here are the shots from our hillwalking adventure to the top of Scarr and Kanturk. Another magnificent day out in the hills, and a damn sight better than our Tonelagee adventure. Again, a huge thank you to Jacky, our official photographer, for getting some of these great shots!

This is my favourite shot Jacky!!!!

Stay safe in the hills guys, and remember to take your bearing from your map, set your compass, and off you go!!!!

Arts Lough in fine fog

Walkabout Wicklow hillwalkers, check out the picture from Arts Lough. A pretty amazing place! Despite the fog obscuring the views, it was a good day out, ignoring the trample through the Everglades at the end! Not so much a river crossing, but more of a swamp crossing. Another story to tell at our Christmas function!

Well done on the descent off the mountain and through the forest. It was pretty steep in places, and I thought it would take us a bit longer, but we pretty much hammered along. As a colelctive we are definately getting faster. Dont forget next weekend the course is heading to Tonelagee.

Beginner Hill Walking Courses/ Club Walks and more...

Well its been a busy period for Walkabout Wicklow over the past few months, and as a result the blog has suffered from not being updated. So now I will attempt to put all of the recent pictures up together so you can enjoy them. So in no particular order - a mixture of club and course pics.

So this is the top of Scarr with our Teachers Club Walking course and some of our club members. What an amazing day to go hillwalking - sunshine all day!!!

Taking it easy and enjoying a well earned lunch break on the top of Scarr Mountain. After Maria's insistance!!!

And one more shot just to make sure we got it right.

Below is the top of Maulin - testing our compass bearings. Luckily they worked, so we live hillwalk another day. Well done to the Rathmines Course.

And now the club. This was one was taken from our Bray to Greystones evening summer stroll - prior to the few drinks in the pub!

And this one was from the top of Mullacleevaughan. A magnificent walk for all of the club members - well done guys!!!! After some serious bog stomping we were rewarded with some fairly stunning views.

And lastly - from the knife edge of Derrybawn. Another stunning walk. Starting with the meander through the forest, and finishing with amazing views of the Glenmalure and Glendalough Valleys. I think we shall do this one again in the future (You can actually see scarr in the background).
So well done to everybody and I hope to see you all out on the hills again soon. Dont forget the Club walk this Saturday. Prepare to be impressed with the views. Walkabout Wicklow!

Lord of the Flys? Perhaps just Lough Bray after some rain!

Hey hillwalkers,

Please see some pics from our Lough Bray adventure. Whilst we were nearly eaten alive by the flies and midgees, the views were worth the climb up onto Eagle Crag. Its a steep way to get to the top, but everyone did exceptionally well, so well done to you all.

Please see Jacky's amazing pics again! Our official Walkabout Wicklow photographer.

Some amazing shots of the Great Sugar Loaf, taken from the military road in Wicklow. Fantastic!

Conquering Lugnaquilla

Well done to everyone at the club who joined us in finally conquering Lugnaquilla. it has been on our list for a while, and it is nice to tick the box. The weather was a bit mixed, but was predominantly nice, although it was pretty wet and miserable when we finally got to the top!

Well done to Kevin, whom led the way with his beacon like yellow hood! And finishing at Fentons pub was a nice treat. We will ave to try and do that more often, but not too often or the walking may take a back seat!

I have also put up a few pics from the moonlight walk, although they didnt turn out the best. Jackie, please send me some your professional pics so I can put them up on the blog - as long as you arent charging form them now that you have your own postcards!!!!
